About me
I run a small editorial team — eight writers, mostly technical documentation. It sounds dull and largely is, but I like being the person who makes something confusing stop being confusing.
The problem
I've read maybe two million words for a living and it has ruined some things. I can't get through a menu without editing it. I notice when someone is using a sentence to hide rather than to say. This is not a personality trait I recommend.
What I do that isn't words
Swim. Four mornings a week, indoor pool, entirely unglamorous. It's the only hour where nothing I do involves language, and I've come to need it more than I expected. I also cook badly and often, which my friends tolerate. Born here, parents from Chennai, spent my twenties in Montreal certain I'd stay. Came back anyway. My mother has never once let this go unmentioned. I'd like to meet someone who says the thing instead of circling it. He doesn't need to be a reader or a writer - I'd honestly prefer he wasn't. Direct, and alright with a woman who works a lot and isn't going to stop.
